Paul's Heart
Paul's Heart is full of love and so much depth that it has to be told in a story.
Paul wanted to start Boerne Art Market in our green space at the cottage. He was so excited WHEN HE CAME TO ME WITH THE IDEA . He was the inspiration and push to bring artists together on Main Street in Boerne. He organized everything and wanted to paint live up by the Main Street sidewalk for our first market. This was July of 2021.
The market was a great success. We had people standing around mesmerized by Paul 's heart painting. He had a flair for the dramatic and out on a show.
This man was kind to all he met. He came to my studio and introduced himself just out of the blue. And then called me in February during snovid in Boerne telling me he was painting my beloved art cottage on Main Street. In a 20 degree snowstorm. He just had goodness inside of him. And so many loved him.
Paul went into the hospital in the next month. And was trying to plan the October Boerne Art market which would have been our second from his hospital bed.
He ended up passing away in August. He touched so many people. And I will always remember him.
So as the October date approached I was just going to cancel the whole market. Paul was the reason for this art market. Not me. But, I decided that we should have this market in honor of him and in memory of him and what he wanted to do and what made him happy.
I asked my artist friends ... Would they be willing to paint in the spot that he painted near the Main Street sidewalk. Everyone shied away from this. It is a bit intimidating to paint with a whole audience. And I did not know if I could actually stand where he stood and paint. It seemed very raw and too overwhelming to think that I could do that.
But I felt like the market would not be the same without him and I needed to at least try. So while his family did end up keeping the original Paul's heart painting that he did that day in July. I tried to stand in his shoes and start a heart. It became easier as I involved the community and we asked our customers and friends and strangers alike that would walk down the sidewalk to stop participate in Paul's heart. We used gesso in modeling paste to build up underneath our professional grade canvas. And then we started painting. I filled eggs with paint and let our friends and community help make this one of a kind painting. We threw the eggs and have a layered love-filled painting in honor of Paul de Luna.
His family and customers showed up that day ... And it felt like a small tribute to him that made my heart feel full.
Some of the proceeds will go Paul's lovely wife and children. And we hope that you'll watch the video that we made of that special day.
